Disruptive hospitals of today and tomorrow

At the end of September, the 2nd Congress on Disruptive Hospitals took place.

Organized by the Official College of Industrial Engineers of Madrid and the Association of Industrial Engineers of Madrid, in collaboration with the General Council of Industrial Engineers and the Spanish Institute of Engineering, the event brought together 23 international experts from leading institutions such as the Mayo Clinic in the United States and Morriston Hospital in the United Kingdom.

Over two days, participants discussed innovations that are transforming the healthcare landscape both nationally and globally.

Conclusions of the Latest Report on the National Health System

The 2023 annual report of the National Health System (SNS), published in August 2024 by the Ministry of Health, leaves no room for doubt: the overall state of healthcare and the health system is worsening rapidly.

This report provides a detailed overview of the population’s health status and the functioning of the healthcare system, based on data collected during 2023 and previous years.

Among the numerous data points, the decline in care quality stands out, reflected in the record increase in waiting times in Primary Care and the reduction in the ratios of healthcare personnel.

The role of private healthcare in the surgical activity

Neurosurgery is the specialty with the highest number of interventions in private healthcare (41.7%), followed by Traumatology (36.7%), Surgery and Digestive Surgery (33.9%).

The private sector within the National Health System (SNS) has been playing a crucial role, taking on a significant portion of healthcare activity, helping to alleviate the public system’s resources, and reducing care pressure, thereby enhancing accessibility to medical care.

According to the “2024 Private Healthcare Sector Observatory,” published by the IDIS Foundation, the private sector conducts approximately 5 million surgical interventions in total.

Spain Leads a European Project on Training in Hospital Engineering

The University Hospital of Gran Canaria Doctor Negrín is leading a European project on training in hospital engineering, to be developed over three years with a budget of 400,000 euros, called Smart Healthcare Engineering.

This initiative is being launched in collaboration with the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC), Transilvania University (Romania), and Manisa University (Turkey), and will provide training to more than 60 final-year engineering students. This European project will begin its first year with on-site training in Gran Canaria.

The primary objective of this initiative, which is part of the Canary Islands Health Department, is to provide students with both theoretical and practical training, including visits to hospital facilities such as the Doctor Negrín Hospital.

Concern grows over the quality of European healthcare systems

This is the main conclusion or message drawn from the results of the 10th edition of the STADA Health Report, recently presented in Rome.
